The Gardneri Killifish (Fundulopanchax gardneri) is a vibrant and relatively hardy species, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced killifish enthusiasts. Originating from West Africa, these fish are renowned for their striking colors and active, engaging personalities. Males display a dazzling array of iridescent blues, greens, and reds, often with a metallic sheen, and their fins are typically adorned with intricate patterns and elongated rays. Females, while more subdued in coloration, still possess a subtle beauty and are essential for breeding. Growing to an average size of 2-2.5 inches (5-6.5 cm), Gardneri Killifish thrive in a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, such as Java moss, floating plants, and small caves. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.0) with a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C). While generally peaceful, males can be territorial with each other, so it's best to keep a single male or a trio (one male, two females) in a species-specific tank or a carefully chosen community setup. They are avid jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. Gardneri Killifish are carnivores and readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, which will enhance their coloration and overall health. Their ease of breeding and captivating display make them a truly rewarding species for any dedicated aquarist.
Can be aggressive towards small fish.
