The Rubber Lip Pleco (Chaetostoma milesi or Chaetostoma formosae) is a fantastic, peaceful bottom-dweller, highly sought after by aquarists for its diligent algae-eating capabilities and manageable size. Originating from fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rivers in South America, this pleco typically grows to a modest 4-5 inches (10-13 cm), making it an ideal choice for community tanks ranging from 20 gallons and up. Its common name perfectly describes its most distinctive feature: a unique, fleshy mouth well-adapted for scraping biofilm and algae from surfaces. Visually, it boasts an attractive mottled pattern of dark brown, black, and tan, providing excellent camouflage against natural substrates and decor. Unlike many larger pleco species, the Rubber Lip Pleco generally leaves live plants alone, focusing its efforts on green algae. They thrive in well-oxygenated water with strong filtration and appreciate a diet supplemented with high-quality pleco wafers, blanched vegetables, and a piece of driftwood for grazing and fiber. Providing plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, rocks, and driftwood, will help this shy but industrious fish feel secure and flourish in your aquarium.
