The Electric Yellow Cichlid (Labidochromis caeruleus), also affectionately known as the 'Yellow Lab,' is a stunning and popular freshwater fish originating from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, Africa. Renowned for its vibrant, iridescent yellow coloration, often with black markings on its dorsal fin and sometimes pelvic fins, this species brings a spectacular splash of color to any Cichlid aquarium. Reaching an average size of 4-5 inches, Electric Yellow Cichlids are known for their relatively peaceful temperament compared to many other Mbuna cichlids, making them an excellent choice for novice and experienced African cichlid keepers alike. They thrive in a well-filtered aquarium of at least 30 gallons, preferring hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8-8.6) and temperatures between 76-82°F (24-28°C). A rocky aquascape with plenty of caves, crevices, and hiding spots is essential to mimic their natural habitat and provide territories, reducing aggression. While they are primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and biofilm in the wild, a high-quality spirulina-based flake or pellet food supplemented with occasional protein sources like brine shrimp or bloodworms will ensure their health and vibrant coloration. They are best kept in a species-specific tank or with other similarly sized and tempered Mbuna cichlids, avoiding overly aggressive tank mates. With proper care, Electric Yellow Cichlids can live for 6-10 years, offering a captivating and lively display.
