The Freshwater Hatchetfish, belonging to the Gasteropelecidae family, is a captivating and unique inhabitant of the aquarium, instantly recognizable by its distinctive hatchet-shaped body and upturned mouth. These peaceful, schooling fish are primarily found in the upper strata of the water column, utilizing their modified pectoral fins to 'fly' or glide across the surface, a behavior known as 'skimming'. Growing to an average size of 1.5 to 2.5 inches (4-6 cm) depending on the species (e.g., Marbled Hatchetfish, Silver Hatchetfish), they boast a shimmering, often silver or iridescent coloration, with some species displaying intricate marbling or lateral lines. Their most notable feature is their exceptional jumping ability, a natural defense mechanism against predators, making a tight-fitting lid absolutely essential for their enclosure. Hatchetfish thrive in well-established, mature aquariums of at least 15-20 gallons for a small school of 6-8 individuals. They prefer soft, acidic to neutral water (pH 5.5-7.0) with a temperature range of 72-80°F (22-27°C). A planted tank with floating vegetation provides essential cover and mimics their natural habitat, offering a sense of security while keeping the light subdued. As surface feeders, their diet should consist of high-quality flake or micro-pellet foods, supplemented with small live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms to ensure optimal health and coloration. Due to their shy and delicate nature, compatible tank mates include other peaceful, small to medium-sized fish that do not compete for surface food, such as small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and otocinclus. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species. Freshwater Hatchetfish are a wonderful addition for aquarists looking for an unusual and elegant surface dweller that adds dynamic movement and visual interest to a community aquarium, provided their specific needs, especially tank security, are met.
