The Boeseman's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) is a stunning and highly sought-after freshwater species originating from the lakes and tributaries of West Papua, Indonesia. Renowned for its vibrant and distinctive coloration, this species exhibits a remarkable gradient, with males displaying brilliant blue or purple hues on the front half of their bodies, transitioning sharply to fiery orange or yellow on the rear half, including the dorsal and anal fins. Females, while more subdued, still possess attractive yellow and silver tones. These active, schooling fish thrive in well-planted aquariums with open swimming spaces, mimicking their natural habitat of clear, slow-moving water. They are peaceful and do well in community tanks with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 7.0-8.0, and moderately hard water. A diet rich in high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia will enhance their color and overall health. Boeseman's Rainbowfish are excellent jumpers, so a secure lid is essential. They are a captivating addition to any suitable aquarium, bringing a dynamic splash of color and activity.
