The Glass Catfish (Kryptopterus vitreolus) is a truly mesmerizing and unique freshwater fish, renowned for its almost entirely transparent body, allowing you to see its skeleton and internal organs. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Malaysia, this peaceful and schooling species adds an ethereal beauty to any community aquarium. They typically grow to about 3-4 inches (7-10 cm) and thrive in well-established tanks with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. Glass Catfish are shy by nature and prefer to be kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals, as this provides them with security and encourages their natural schooling behaviors, making them more active and visible. They appreciate a planted environment with plenty of hiding spots among fine-leaved plants and driftwood, as well as open swimming areas. Being omnivores, their diet should consist of high-quality flake foods, small pellets, and various frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Due to their delicate nature and preference for stable water conditions, they are best suited for intermediate to experienced aquarists. Their captivating transparency and calm demeanor make them an excellent addition to a peaceful community tank alongside other non-aggressive species.
