The Dwarf Gourami (Trichogaster lalius) is a captivating and popular freshwater fish, prized for its vibrant coloration and generally peaceful demeanor. Reaching an adult size of only about 2 to 2.5 inches (5-6 cm), they are perfect for smaller community aquariums. Males are particularly stunning, displaying brilliant iridescent stripes of red, blue, and orange, often accented by striking finnage. Females are typically duller in color, sporting a more muted silver-brown hue. These labyrinth fish possess a unique anabantoid organ, allowing them to breathe atmospheric air, which means they can survive in lower oxygen conditions but prefer well-aerated water. Dwarf Gouramis are generally shy and thrive in well-planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots among live or artificial plants, driftwood, and rocks. They prefer a peaceful environment and are best kept with other docile, non-fin-nipping species. While generally peaceful, males can be territorial with each other, so it's best to keep a single male or a male-female pair in most setups. They are omnivores, readily accepting high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and supplemented with frozen or live brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to enhance their colors and health. Ideal water parameters include temperatures between 72-82°F (22-28°C), a pH of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. With proper care and a suitable environment, Dwarf Gouramis can be a dazzling and delightful addition to any freshwater aquarium.
