The Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is one of the most iconic and beloved freshwater aquarium fish, instantly recognizable by its distinctive triangular body shape, long flowing fins, and graceful swimming motion. Hailing from the Amazon basin, these cichlids bring an undeniable elegance to any well-maintained community tank. They typically display a silvery body adorned with dark vertical stripes, but captive breeding has produced a stunning array of color morphs, including marble, koi, black, gold, and albino varieties, often with iridescent scales. While generally peaceful, Angelfish are cichlids and can exhibit territorial behavior, especially as they mature or during breeding. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons for a single fish, and 55 gallons or more for a small group, is recommended to provide ample space for their vertical stature and to mitigate aggression. They thrive in warm, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5-7.5, temperature 76-82°F or 24-28°C) with good filtration and plenty of tall plants or driftwood for cover. Angelfish are omnivores and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, and spirulina, which helps to enhance their vibrant colors and promote their health. Their majestic presence and relatively long lifespan (up to 10 years or more) make them a captivating centerpiece for both novice and experienced aquarists alike.
Will eat very small fish.
