The Denison Barb, also widely known as the Roseline Shark, is a truly spectacular and highly sought-after freshwater fish renowned for its vibrant coloration and graceful schooling behavior. Native to the fast-flowing streams and rivers of the Western Ghats in India, this species exhibits a striking torpedo-shaped body adorned with a prominent horizontal black stripe running from its snout to its caudal fin, perfectly complemented by a brilliant red or orange stripe directly above it. Its fins are typically clear or subtly edged with red or yellow, adding to its elegant appearance. Growing up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length, Denison Barbs are active, peaceful, and thrive in well-established aquariums that mimic their natural, oxygen-rich environment. They are obligate schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to allow them to display their natural behaviors, reducing stress and enhancing their visual impact. A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a small school, with larger tanks being preferable to accommodate their active swimming habits. The ideal aquarium setup includes a strong filtration system to maintain pristine water quality, a moderate to strong current, fine gravel or sand substrate, and plenty of open swimming space interspersed with driftwood and robust plants that can withstand their occasional browsing. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5-7.5) with a temperature range of 68-77°F (20-25°C). Denison Barbs are omnivorous and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They make excellent community tank inhabitants with other peaceful, similarly sized fish that appreciate brisk water conditions, such as other larger tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and some loach species. Their dazzling appearance and engaging behavior make the Denison Barb a centerpiece attraction for any dedicated aquarist.
