The Zebra Danio (Danio rerio) is a beloved and iconic freshwater fish, celebrated for its vibrant energy and distinctive striped pattern. Originating from South Asia, these small, torpedo-shaped fish are adorned with striking horizontal blue-purple and gold-silver stripes that run from gill to tail, giving them their characteristic 'zebra' appearance. Reaching an average size of 1.5 to 2 inches, Zebra Danios are incredibly active swimmers, constantly darting and chasing throughout the upper and middle levels of the aquarium, making them a fantastic source of motion and excitement. They are highly social schooling fish, thriving in groups of six or more, which not only enhances their natural behavior but also reduces stress. Peaceful and hardy, Zebra Danios are an excellent choice for beginner aquarists and community tanks, tolerating a wide range of water parameters. They are omnivores, readily accepting high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional live or frozen treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp. An ideal tank setup for Danios includes a well-filtered aquarium of at least 10-20 gallons (for a small school), with plenty of open swimming space, along with some plants (live or artificial) and décor for hiding and exploration. Their playful nature and low maintenance make them a staple in the aquarium hobby, bringing life and color to any freshwater setup.
Very active, hardy, and popular.
