The Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya) is a captivating and peaceful freshwater fish, renowned for its vibrant coloration and lively disposition, making it a popular choice for community aquariums. Males display a stunning, deep cherry-red hue, particularly during breeding or when competing for mates, while females exhibit a more subdued, yet attractive, reddish-orange or brownish-pink. Both sexes feature a distinctive horizontal dark stripe running along their flanks, which can vary in intensity. Growing to a modest size of about 2 inches (5 cm), Cherry Barbs are active swimmers, preferring the middle and lower levels of the tank. They are generally hardy and adaptable, thriving in well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas. Their schooling nature means they should be kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals to encourage natural behavior and reduce shyness. With a peaceful temperament, they coexist well with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species, making them an excellent addition to a diverse tropical setup.
