The Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher 'Electric Blue') is a stunning and popular freshwater cichlid, highly prized for its vibrant, iridescent blue coloration that truly makes it stand out in any aquarium. This captive-bred variant of the Blue Acara is renowned for its intense, almost neon-blue body, often accented with subtle dark vertical bars that become more prominent during breeding or stress. Growing to a moderate size of about 5-6 inches, they possess a classic cichlid body shape, compact yet robust, with flowing fins. Electric Blue Acaras are known for their relatively peaceful temperament compared to many other cichlids, making them an excellent choice for community tanks with similarly sized, docile fish. They are intelligent and exhibit interesting behaviors, often sifting through substrate, and are known to form strong pair bonds when breeding. Provide them with a well-maintained aquarium of at least 30 gallons, offering plenty of hiding spots among rocks and driftwood, and a sandy substrate. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5-7.5) with temperatures between 76-82°F (24-28°C) and appreciate clean, oxygenated water. A varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp will keep their colors vibrant and ensure their health. Their striking beauty and manageable disposition make the Electric Blue Acara a captivating addition for both novice and experienced aquarists.
One of the most peaceful cichlids.
