The Green Terror (Andinoacara rivulatus) is a captivating South American cichlid renowned for its striking beauty and assertive personality, truly living up to its name. Adults display a stunning iridescent blue-green coloration, often adorned with shimmering scales, dark blotches, and vibrant orange or red margins on their fins, particularly pronounced in mature males and during breeding. Males can also develop a prominent nuchal hump. Growing to an impressive size of 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) for males and slightly smaller for females, they require a substantial aquarium. A minimum of 55-75 gallons is recommended for a single specimen, with 125 gallons or more necessary for a pair or when housed with other large, robust tank mates. Their temperament is highly territorial and aggressive, making them unsuitable for peaceful community tanks. Ideal tank mates include other similarly sized, semi-aggressive cichlids, large plecos, or substantial characins that can hold their own. The tank setup should provide plenty of secure hiding spots and visual barriers using large rocks and driftwood, as these fish love to rearrange their environment and dig. A sandy or fine gravel substrate is preferred, as they are avid diggers. Water parameters should be maintained at a pH of 6.5-7.5, GH of 5-15 dKH, and a temperature range of 72-79°F (22-26°C). As omnivorous carnivores, their diet should consist of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with a variety of frozen foods such as bloodworms, Mysis shrimp, and chopped krill, along with occasional live foods. Excellent filtration and diligent water changes are paramount to manage their bioload and maintain pristine water quality, crucial for their health and vibrant coloration. The Green Terror is a magnificent display fish for experienced cichlid keepers who appreciate its bold character and stunning aesthetics.
