The Severum, or Heros efasciatus, is a captivating and intelligent Cichlid native to South America, renowned for its peaceful demeanor among larger Cichlids and its stunning appearance. These fish typically sport a base color ranging from olive green to yellowish-brown, often adorned with faint vertical banding and iridescent spots that shimmer beautifully under aquarium lighting. A distinct black spot is usually present at the base of the caudal fin. Severums are known for their inquisitive nature and can even recognize their owners over time. They thrive in well-maintained, spacious aquariums (minimum 55-75 gallons for a single adult, larger for groups) with plenty of open swimming space, robust filtration, and a gentle to moderate current. Provide a substrate of fine sand or gravel, along with driftwood, smooth rocks, and hardy plants (such as Anubias or Java Fern) that can withstand their occasional foraging. Water parameters should be soft to moderately hard, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) and temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C). A varied diet of high-quality Cichlid pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and spirulina-enriched preparations will ensure their vibrant health and coloration. Severums are generally good community fish for other similarly sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive species, making them a fantastic choice for the seasoned aquarist looking for a centerpiece fish with character.
