The Kribensis Cichlid (Pelvicachromis pulcher) is a vibrant and popular dwarf cichlid, highly favored by aquarists for its stunning colors, manageable size, and fascinating breeding behaviors. Originating from West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon, these fish are characterized by their iridescent purplish-pink bellies, often becoming more intense during breeding, and a horizontal dark stripe running along their body. Males typically grow larger, reaching up to 4 inches, and display more elongated dorsal and anal fins with pointed ends, while females are smaller, rounder, and often exhibit a more pronounced red or purple hue on their undersides. Kribensis are generally peaceful, making them excellent candidates for community tanks with other similarly sized, non-aggressive species. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and rocks, which are essential for their well-being and to facilitate their cave-spawning habits. Water parameters should be soft to moderately hard, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5) and temperatures between 75-80°F (24-27°C). A varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods will keep them healthy and enhance their coloration. Their most captivating aspect is their parental care; both parents are dedicated guardians of their eggs and fry, making them a rewarding species to observe for any aquarist.
