The Bolivian Ram, scientifically known as Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, is a captivating and relatively peaceful dwarf cichlid highly favored by aquarists for its vibrant personality and stunning yet understated beauty. Originating from the slow-moving rivers and streams of Bolivia and Brazil, these fish display a beautiful mosaic of iridescent blues, greens, and coppers across their bodies, often highlighted by a distinct dark spot on their flank and subtle vertical banding. Unlike their more boisterous cousin, the German Blue Ram, Bolivian Rams are generally more robust and forgiving, making them an excellent choice for intermediate aquarists or those looking to venture into the world of cichlids. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with fine sand substrates, numerous hiding spots provided by rocks and driftwood, and stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 74-82°F). Bolivian Rams are best kept in pairs or small groups in tanks of 20 gallons or larger, where their fascinating behaviors, including pair bonding and mild territorial displays, can be observed. They are omnivores and will readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods. Their inquisitive nature and graceful movements make them a delightful centerpiece in a community tank with other peaceful, similarly sized fish.
Hardier than German Blue Rams.
