The Otocinclus Catfish, affectionately known as 'Oto' or 'Dwarf Sucker Catfish,' is a small, peaceful, and highly beneficial addition to any planted community aquarium. These charming little fish, typically reaching only 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8-5 cm) in length, are renowned for their insatiable appetite for algae, making them natural and efficient cleaners. Sporting a mottled brown, grey, or olive coloration with a distinctive dark lateral stripe, their cryptic patterns help them blend seamlessly into a planted environment. Otos are schooling fish and thrive in groups of six or more, displaying more confidence and natural behavior when kept together. They are primarily herbivores, constantly grazing on diatoms, green spot algae, and biofilm from tank surfaces, leaves, and decor. While they are excellent algae eaters, it's crucial to supplement their diet with blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach, as well as high-quality algae wafers, especially in tanks where algae growth is minimal. Otocinclus are sensitive to water parameters and thrive in well-established, mature aquariums with stable, clean, and oxygenated water. A densely planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and driftwood provides the ideal environment, mimicking their natural habitat in South American streams. They are compatible with most peaceful, small to medium-sized fish and invertebrates, making them an invaluable member of a thriving freshwater ecosystem, keeping your aquarium pristine and balanced.
