The Blue Gularis Killifish (Fundulopanchax sjoestedti) is a magnificent and highly sought-after species among killifish enthusiasts, renowned for its dazzling coloration and elegant finnage. Males are particularly stunning, displaying a vibrant metallic blue body often adorned with striking red or orange spotting and stripes that extend into their elongated, flowing dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. These fins can be quite impressive, giving the fish a regal appearance. Females, while smaller and less colorful, still possess a subtle charm. Growing larger than many other killifish, males can reach up to 6 inches, making them a substantial presence in the aquarium. Despite their size, they are generally peaceful towards similarly sized or larger tankmates, though caution should be exercised with very small fish or fry, which they may perceive as food. It's best to keep a single male with multiple females, or a pair, as males can be territorial with each other. A secure lid is essential as they are expert jumpers. To thrive, Blue Gularis require a well-maintained aquarium of at least 15-20 gallons for a pair, with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.0) and temperatures between 72-78°F (22-26°C). A densely planted tank with floating plants to dim the light, along with a dark substrate, will encourage their best colors and provide security. They are carnivorous and relish a diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and mosquito larvae; some may accept high-quality flakes or pellets over time. With proper care, these captivating killifish can live for 2-3 years, offering a truly rewarding experience for the dedicated aquarist.
Large, predatory killifish. Best kept in a species-only tank.
