The Bleeding Heart Tetra (Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma) is a stunning and popular freshwater fish known for its vibrant personality and captivating appearance.Originating from the Amazon River basin, particularly in Brazil and Peru, this species gets its evocative name from the prominent, dark red, heart-shaped spot located on its flanks, just behind the gill plate. The rest of its body typically sports a silvery to translucent pinkish hue, often accented with delicate black markings on the dorsal and anal fins, and sometimes a hint of red in the other fins.Growing to an average size of about 2-2.5 inches (5-6.5 cm), Bleeding Heart Tetras are active, peaceful schooling fish that thrive in well-planted community aquariums. They are best kept in groups of at least six, preferably ten or more, to showcase their natural schooling behavior and reduce stress, which can lead to more vibrant coloration.A mature, well-filtered aquarium of at least 20 gallons for a small group is recommended, with larger tanks being ideal for bigger schools. They appreciate a planted environment with driftwood and rocks that offer hiding spots and breaking lines of sight, mimicking their natural habitat of slow-moving waters with dense vegetation.Water parameters should be soft to moderately hard (GH 4-15), with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5) and temperatures between 72-78°F (22-26°C).A varied diet of high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms will ensure optimal health and coloration.Bleeding Heart Tetras are excellent tank mates for other peaceful, similarly sized community fish, such as other tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and small plecos, adding a splash of color and dynamic movement to any freshwater setup.
Peaceful but can be shy; named for the red spot on its side.
