The Black Sharkminnow, or Labeo chrysophekadion, is a formidable and impressive species often admired for its sleek, shark-like appearance. Despite its common name, it is not a true shark but a large, active cyprinid belonging to the minnow family. These fish are characterized by their striking, uniformly dark, often jet-black bodies, pointed snouts, and prominent dorsal fins that contribute to their predatory aesthetic. Native to Southeast Asia, they are powerful swimmers that can grow quite large, easily reaching lengths of 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) in suitable conditions, though often slightly smaller in home aquariums. Due to their substantial adult size and semi-aggressive to aggressive temperament, especially as they mature, Black Sharkminnows require very large aquariums—typically 200 gallons (750 liters) or more—with ample open swimming space and robust filtration. They are territorial and can be highly dominant, particularly towards smaller, slower-moving, or similarly shaped fish. Therefore, they are best kept as a solitary specimen or, in truly massive setups, with other very large, fast-moving, and equally robust tank mates. Their diet should be varied, consisting of high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with fresh or frozen vegetables, blanched spinach, spirulina, and occasional protein sources like bloodworms or brine shrimp. Providing a suitable environment for a Black Sharkminnow is a commitment to a truly magnificent and powerful aquatic inhabitant that can be a stunning centerpiece for the dedicated aquarist.
Extremely aggressive and territorial. Not a community fish.
