The Iridescent Shark (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus), despite its name and shark-like appearance, is actually a large species of freshwater catfish native to the rivers of Southeast Asia. Renowned for its streamlined body, silver-gray coloration, and highly reflective, 'iridescent' scales that shimmer under light, it is a truly striking fish. However, prospective owners must be aware of its immense growth potential; these fish can reach lengths of over 3 feet (1 meter) in captivity and significantly larger in the wild. As such, they require exceptionally large aquariums, often hundreds or even thousands of gallons, to thrive and prevent stunting or severe stress. They are fast, active swimmers and prefer to be kept in schools of at least three to five individuals, which further amplifies their space requirements. Iridescent Sharks are omnivorous, requiring a varied diet of high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and occasional fresh vegetables. While generally peaceful towards fish too large to be considered prey, their sheer size means they are best suited for large, robust tank mates like other giant gouramis, large plecos, or other substantial riverine species. Due to their complex needs, especially their ultimate size, Iridescent Sharks are not suitable for most home aquariums and are best reserved for public aquariums or experienced hobbyists with access to very large, specialized setups.
Grows to a massive size. Not suitable for home aquariums. Will eat smaller fish.
