The Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a vibrant and popular freshwater fish, celebrated for its stunning array of colors, intricate fin patterns, and lively demeanor. Originating from South America and the Caribbean, these livebearers are a staple in both beginner and experienced aquariums due to their hardiness and ease of care. Males are particularly dazzling, showcasing an incredible variety of fin shapes, including fan, delta, and swordtail, along with iridescent scales that shimmer in shades of red, blue, green, yellow, and orange. Females are generally larger and possess more subdued coloration, typically a silvery-gray body, though selectively bred strains can display lovely tail colors. Guppies are peaceful, active swimmers that thrive in well-maintained community tanks with ample swimming space and some plant cover. They are omnivorous and readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Known for their prolific breeding, Guppies are often called 'millionfish' and can quickly multiply, making them an excellent choice for those interested in observing the reproductive cycle and genetic variation within a species.
Males have long, flowing fins.
