The Red Tail Shark (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor) is a truly striking and popular freshwater fish, prized for its dramatic contrast of a velvety black body and a vibrant, fiery red tail. This species possesses a sleek, torpedo-shaped body and an active, inquisitive nature, making it a captivating centerpiece in many aquariums. Growing to an adult size of approximately 5-6 inches (12-15 cm), Red Tail Sharks are known for their territorial behavior, especially towards other bottom-dwelling fish, similar-looking species, or other shark varieties. They thrive in a well-structured environment with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and dense planting, which allows them to establish their personal territories and feel secure. A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a single adult to provide ample swimming space and reduce aggression. While generally robust, they appreciate stable water parameters: pH 6.5-7.5, moderately soft to hard water (5-15 dGH), and temperatures between 72-79°F (22-26°C). As omnivores, their diet should consist of a high-quality flake or pellet food supplemented with frozen or live options like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter to ensure optimal health and coloration. When selecting tank mates, choose fast-moving, mid-to-top dwelling species that are not fin-nippers, such as larger tetras, barbs, and gouramis, to minimize potential conflicts. Despite their occasionally feisty nature, the Red Tail Shark remains a perennial favorite among aquarists for its stunning appearance and engaging personality.
Highly territorial towards other shark-like fish and its own kind.
