The Electric Blue Hap, also known as Sciaenochromis fryeri, is a true showstopper among freshwater aquarium fish, renowned for its intensely vibrant, iridescent electric blue coloration that makes it a centerpiece in any appropriate setup. Hailing from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi in Africa, this cichlid is a medium-sized, torpedo-shaped predator that brings both beauty and dynamic behavior to the cichlid enthusiast's tank. Males display the most spectacular blue, often with vertical stripes or markings that shimmer under proper lighting, while females are typically more subdued, exhibiting a silvery-grey to light blue hue. Known for its relatively peaceful yet confident demeanor compared to some other Mbuna cichlids, the Electric Blue Hap can be housed in a species-specific tank or a carefully planned community of other similarly sized and tempered African cichlids, particularly other Haps or Peacocks. An aquarium of at least 75 gallons is recommended for a single male or a small group, providing ample swimming space and plenty of rockwork with caves and crevices for security and territorial establishment. They thrive in hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8-8.6) with temperatures between 76-82°F (24-28°C), mimicking their natural environment. As carnivores, their diet should consist of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes supplemented with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp to ensure optimal health and color. With proper care, the Electric Blue Hap is a stunning and rewarding addition, offering a captivating display of color and intriguing social interactions.
