The Dragon Blood Peacock is a stunning and highly sought-after freshwater cichlid, a hybrid species derived from various Aulonocara peacocks. Renowned for its incredibly vibrant coloration, this fish typically displays an intense spectrum of fiery reds, oranges, and sometimes hints of pink or yellow, often with iridescent scales that shimmer under proper lighting. Males are particularly spectacular, exhibiting more pronounced and deeper hues, especially when mature and during breeding periods. Growing to an average size of 4-6 inches, the Dragon Blood Peacock makes a magnificent centerpiece in a larger cichlid aquarium. They possess a moderately peaceful temperament for an African cichlid, generally coexisting well with other Peacock Cichlids, Haps, and some less aggressive Mbuna species, provided ample space and hiding spots are available. A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a small group, with larger tanks preferred for communities. Aquascaping should include plenty of rocky structures, caves, and a sandy substrate to mimic their natural rocky lake environment and provide territories. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 7.8-8.6, and hard water. Their diet should consist of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and mysis shrimp to enhance their colors and provide essential nutrients. As mouthbrooders, they are fascinating to observe during breeding. The Dragon Blood Peacock is an excellent choice for intermediate to advanced aquarists looking to add a splash of dramatic color and personality to their African cichlid display.
