The OB Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara species) is a highly sought-after and visually stunning freshwater fish, renowned for its dazzling and unpredictable color patterns. 'OB' stands for Orange Blotch, referring to the striking, irregular patches of orange, red, yellow, and sometimes blue or purple that randomly adorn its body, set against a base color that can range from blue to black or silver. No two OB Peacocks are exactly alike, making each specimen a unique living work of art in the aquarium. Originating from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi in Africa, this cichlid is a hybrid strain, selectively bred for its captivating coloration. Males are typically more vibrant and display the most intense blotches, especially during breeding, while females tend to be duller or possess more subdued patterns. In terms of temperament, OB Peacocks are generally considered semi-aggressive, exhibiting a more peaceful nature compared to many other African cichlids, making them suitable for a well-planned Malawi cichlid community tank. However, males can be territorial, especially towards other males or similar-looking fish, so it's best to keep one male with multiple females (a harem setup) or in a larger tank with plenty of line-of-sight breaks to diffuse aggression. For a thriving environment, a minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a single male and a few females, with larger tanks (75+ gallons) preferred for community setups. They require pristine water conditions with a stable temperature between 76-82°F (24-28°C), a pH range of 7.8-8.6, and hard, alkaline water. The substrate should ideally be sand or fine gravel, mimicking their natural habitat. Aquascaping should include plenty of rock formations, caves, and crevices to provide hiding spots and delineate territories, crucial for reducing stress and aggression. Their diet should consist of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with frozen or live foods like Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and spirulina-enriched foods to enhance their colors. Overfeeding should be avoided, as it can lead to health issues and poor water quality. OB Peacocks are maternal mouthbrooders, with the female carrying the eggs and fry in her mouth for several weeks until they are free-swimming. This fascinating breeding behavior adds another layer of interest for the dedicated aquarist. Overall, the OB Peacock Cichlid is an extraordinary choice for the experienced cichlid keeper looking for a fish with unparalleled beauty, engaging behavior, and a relatively manageable temperament within the African cichlid world. Their dynamic colors and unique patterns ensure they are always a focal point in any well-maintained aquarium.
