The Auratus Cichlid (Melanochromis auratus) is a stunning and highly territorial Mbuna cichlid originating from Lake Malawi, known for its dramatic sexual dimorphism. Juveniles and females typically display vibrant horizontal stripes of brilliant yellow or gold alternating with dark black, creating a truly eye-catching pattern. Mature males, however, undergo a remarkable transformation, often developing a darker, almost black body with striking light blue or white stripes, a reverse of the female's coloration. Reaching an average size of 4-5 inches, Auratus Cichlids are a beautiful but challenging species for the aquarist. They are renowned for their aggressive and highly territorial nature, especially males, making them unsuitable for peaceful community tanks. They thrive in a dedicated Lake Malawi biotope with hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8-8.6) and temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C). A minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a single male with multiple females, with larger tanks being ideal for groups or mixed Mbuna setups. The aquarium should be densely aquascaped with rocks, caves, and crevices to provide abundant hiding spots and territorial boundaries, crucial for mitigating aggression. As herbivores, their diet should consist primarily of high-quality spirulina flakes or pellets, supplemented with blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. Avoid high-protein foods, which can lead to Malawi bloat. Due to their specific care requirements and combative temperament, Auratus Cichlids are best suited for experienced cichlid keepers capable of managing their assertive behavior and providing an appropriate environment.
Mbuna. Notoriously aggressive and intolerant of tankmates, especially other males.
