The Demasoni Cichlid (Pseudotropheus demasoni) is a striking and highly sought-after dwarf cichlid from Lake Malawi, renowned for its vibrant coloration and spirited personality. These small, torpedo-shaped fish typically reach a maximum size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6-8 cm), making them an excellent choice for smaller cichlid setups, though their intense territoriality requires careful planning. Their most distinguishing feature is their electrifying pattern of alternating horizontal stripes: a deep, iridescent blue or purple-blue contrasted sharply with bold, black bands. Both males and females exhibit this same stunning coloration, making it difficult to sex them visually. Demasoni Cichlids are highly active and incredibly aggressive, especially towards conspecifics and similarly patterned fish. They thrive in rocky environments that mimic their natural habitat, requiring ample caves, crevices, and rockwork to establish territories and provide hiding spots. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is often recommended for a single male and multiple females, or larger for a species-only group where aggression can be diffused among many individuals. They are herbivorous, primarily feeding on algal growth in the wild, so their diet in the aquarium should consist mainly of high-quality spirulina flakes, pellets, and blanched vegetables, with occasional protein supplements. Strict attention to water parameters (pH 7.8-8.6, hard water, 76-82°F) and excellent filtration is crucial for their long-term health. While challenging due to their aggression, the Demasoni Cichlid's breathtaking beauty and lively behavior make it a rewarding species for experienced cichlid enthusiasts.
Mbuna. Must be kept in large groups (12+) to manage extreme aggression towards conspecifics.
