The Cobalt Blue Zebra, scientifically known as *Maylandia callainos*, is a breathtakingly vibrant African Cichlid that brings a splash of electric blue to any appropriately set up aquarium. Hailing from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, this species is renowned for its intense, iridescent blue coloration that covers its entire body, often complemented by subtle vertical barring that gives it its 'zebra' moniker. Males typically display a more vivid hue and may develop egg spots on their anal fins. Reaching an average size of 4-5 inches, these fish are active and robust, making them a captivating centerpiece in a Malawi cichlid tank. While undeniably beautiful, Cobalt Blue Zebras are known for their territorial and moderately aggressive nature, especially males. They thrive in aquariums of 55 gallons or larger, featuring plenty of rockwork, caves, and crevices to establish territories and provide hiding spots. Excellent water quality, with hard, alkaline conditions (pH 7.8-8.6) mimicking their natural habitat, is crucial for their health and vibrant color. Their diet should be primarily herbivorous, consisting of high-quality spirulina flakes or pellets, supplemented with occasional protein-rich foods. With proper care and tank mates, the Cobalt Blue Zebra offers an incredibly rewarding and visually stunning experience for the dedicated cichlid enthusiast.
Mbuna. Less aggressive than some zebras but still requires a species-specific setup.
