The Red Top Hongi, a striking and popular Mbuna cichlid from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, is a true centerpiece for any African cichlid enthusiast. Characterized by its brilliant yellow to light blue body adorned with a contrasting, fiery red or orange dorsal fin (hence its name), this species, often identified as a variant of *Maylandia callainos* or *Labidochromis caeruleus* 'Hongi', brings a splash of vibrant color to the aquarium. Males typically display more intense coloration and can be quite territorial, especially during breeding. Reaching an average size of 4-5 inches, Red Top Hongis thrive in a well-structured Malawi cichlid setup. They require a minimum tank size of 55 gallons, with plenty of rockwork, caves, and crevices to establish territories and provide hiding spots, mimicking their natural rocky habitat. Water parameters should be hard and alkaline, with a pH between 7.8-8.6 and temperatures ranging from 76-82°F (24-28°C). As primarily herbivorous cichlids, their diet should consist of high-quality spirulina flakes, cichlid pellets, and occasional blanched vegetables, with sparingly offered meaty treats to prevent digestive issues like Malawi bloat. While moderately aggressive, they can be successfully housed with other robust Mbuna cichlids of similar temperament, provided adequate space and appropriate male-to-female ratios to diffuse aggression. Their relatively easy breeding habits, being maternal mouthbrooders, add another fascinating dimension for dedicated hobbyists. The Red Top Hongi is an excellent choice for experienced aquarists looking to add a dynamic and visually stunning fish to their cichlid community.
