The Salt and Pepper Corydoras (Corydoras habrosus) is a captivating and highly sought-after dwarf corydoras, celebrated for its diminutive size and charming speckled appearance. Reaching only about 1 to 1.5 inches, this species sports a distinctive mottled pattern of dark spots and dashes across a pale, often translucent body, truly reminiscent of salt and pepper granules. These peaceful and highly social bottom-dwellers thrive when kept in groups of six or more, exhibiting delightful schooling behaviors as they forage tirelessly through the substrate. An ideal inhabitant for nano aquariums (10 gallons minimum for a small group) or larger community tanks, their care is relatively straightforward. They require a soft, fine sand substrate to protect their delicate barbels, which are essential for sifting food. A well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots among driftwood and rocks will make them feel secure. Water parameters should be kept stable: temperatures between 72-79°F (22-26°C), a pH range of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (2-15 dGH). As omnivorous scavengers, they readily accept high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and small frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, provided the food reaches the tank bottom. Due to their peaceful nature, excellent tank mates include other small, non-aggressive species such as Chili Rasboras, Endler's Guppies, small Tetras, Otocinclus catfish, and dwarf shrimp. Regular water changes and excellent water quality are paramount for their health. The Salt and Pepper Corydoras adds an active, engaging, and utterly charming dimension to any well-maintained freshwater aquarium.
