The Exclamation Point Rasbora, scientifically known as Boraras urophthalmoides, is a captivating nano fish highly sought after by aquarists for its diminutive size, peaceful nature, and striking beauty. Originating from slow-moving blackwater streams and heavily vegetated habitats in Southeast Asia, this species is perfect for planted nano tanks and aquascapes. Its most distinctive feature is a prominent, often iridescent black spot rimmed with orange or red on its caudal peduncle, resembling an exclamation point, which gives it its common name. The rest of its slender body is typically a translucent, rosy-orange to reddish-brown, sometimes adorned with subtle lateral stripes or an iridescent sheen depending on lighting and water parameters. Growing to just under an inch, Exclamation Point Rasboras are best kept in schools of 8-10 or more individuals to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce shyness. They thrive in mature, well-planted aquariums with soft, acidic water (pH 5.0-6.5), low to moderate lighting, and plenty of hiding spots among fine-leaved plants like Java moss or rotala. A gentle filtration system and stable water parameters are crucial for their long-term health. Due to their small size, they are ideal tankmates for other peaceful nano species such as certain shrimp (e.g., Neocaridina, Caridina), chili rasboras, celestial pearl Danios, and otocinclus catfish. Their diet should consist of high-quality micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp to ensure optimal coloration and health.
