The Elephant Nose Fish (Gnathonemus petersii) is an extraordinary and highly intelligent freshwater species originating from the rivers of West and Central Africa. Named for its distinctive elongated proboscis-like mouth, which it uses to forage for food in muddy substrates and to detect objects, this fish possesses a fascinating ability to generate a weak electric field around its body. This electrosensory system allows it to navigate, communicate, and locate prey in its often murky natural habitat, making it a truly unique creature in the aquarium world. In terms of appearance, it typically features a dark, almost black, body with a striking white or cream-colored band running along its sides, and its dorsal and anal fins are set far back, close to the tail. Reaching up to 9 inches (23 cm) in length, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 50 gallons for a single specimen, or larger for a group. Elephant Nose Fish are nocturnal and prefer dim lighting, plenty of hiding spots among dense planting, roots, and caves, and a soft, sandy substrate to protect their delicate 'nose' while foraging. They are sensitive to water quality, demanding pristine, well-filtered, and aged water with stable parameters (pH 6.5-7.5, temperature 75-82°F / 24-28°C). While generally peaceful towards other species, they can be territorial with their own kind, especially if housed in insufficient numbers or tank size; a group of 5+ is often recommended to dilute aggression. Their diet should consist of small, meaty foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, ideally offered after lights out. Given their unique characteristics and specific care requirements, Elephant Nose Fish are best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide a tranquil and well-maintained environment for these captivating aquatic marvels.
