The Peacock Gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda) is a vibrant and enchanting freshwater fish, highly prized in the aquarium hobby for its striking coloration and peaceful disposition. Originating from Papua New Guinea, these small, active fish typically grow to about 2.5-3 inches (6-7.5 cm) in length, making them an excellent choice for nano and community aquariums.Males are particularly stunning, displaying brilliant blue bodies adorned with iridescent red-orange fins and prominent black ocelli (eyespots) on their caudal fin. They also develop a more pronounced nuchal hump (forehead bump) and richer coloring, especially during breeding. Females are generally smaller, with a more subdued, though still attractive, pearly-white to pale yellow body and often a yellow tinge to their belly, particularly when gravid.Peacock Gudgeons are peaceful, shoaling fish that thrive in well-planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots among driftwood, rocks, and live plants like Java Moss and Anubias. They appreciate a calm environment with stable water parameters: a temperature range of 72-79°F (22-26°C), a pH of 6.5-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. A minimum tank size of 10-20 gallons is recommended for a small group. They are micro-predators and readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and especially live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, which help intensify their colors and condition them for breeding. These gudgeons are relatively easy to breed in a home aquarium, often spawning in caves or PVC pipes, with the male diligently guarding the eggs.Their non-aggressive nature makes them ideal tank mates for other small, peaceful species like various tetras, rasboras, dwarf gouramis, and corydoras catfish. The Peacock Gudgeon is a truly captivating addition to any suitable freshwater setup, offering both visual appeal and engaging behavior for aquarists of all experience levels.
