The Bumblebee Catfish, scientifically known as Microglanis iheringi, is a captivating and relatively small freshwater fish renowned for its striking coloration and peaceful demeanor, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums. Originating from the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America, these nocturnal catfish typically reach a modest size of about 2 to 3 inches (5-7.5 cm). Their most prominent feature is their vibrant pattern of bold black and yellow (or sometimes orange) bands, resembling the namesake bumblebee, which provides excellent camouflage in their natural habitat among leaf litter and submerged roots. They possess long, sensitive barbels that they use to forage for food in low light conditions. Bumblebee Catfish are generally hardy and adaptable, preferring a well-established aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.2) and a temperature range of 72-79°F (22-26°C). A densely planted tank with plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and leaf litter is crucial to make them feel secure and encourage them to be more active, especially during dawn and dusk. They are omnivorous bottom-dwellers, accepting a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Due to their shy and peaceful nature, they are best kept with other small, non-aggressive fish. While not strictly schooling, they do appreciate the company of their own kind and can be more confident in groups of 3 or more. Their charming appearance and easy-going temperament make them a delightful addition for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for an interesting and beautiful bottom-dwelling species.
Nocturnal, will eat small fish.
