The Emerald Corydoras (Corydoras splendens, though often sold as Brochis splendens or Corydoras aeneus 'Green' due to historical reclassifications and similar appearance) is a captivating and peaceful schooling catfish, highly prized for its iridescent, metallic green to bronze sheen that truly comes alive under proper lighting. Growing larger than many other Corydoras species, typically reaching about 2.5 to 3 inches (6-7.5 cm), its robust, armored body makes it a striking addition to the bottom layer of a community aquarium. These social fish thrive in groups of six or more, exhibiting their characteristic playful and active foraging behavior as they sift through the substrate with their sensitive barbels. They prefer a soft, sandy substrate to prevent damage to their delicate feelers, along with plenty of hiding spots among plants, driftwood, and rocks. Emerald Corydoras are excellent scavengers, diligently cleaning up uneaten food, but their diet should be supplemented with high-quality sinking pellets, as well as frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
