The Hillstream Loach, often referred to as the 'Butterfly Loach' or 'Hong Kong Pleco' (though not a true pleco), is a captivating and unique bottom-dwelling fish perfectly suited for specialized aquariums. Native to the fast-flowing, highly oxygenated mountain streams of Asia, these fish have evolved a fascinating flattened body and specialized sucker mouth that allows them to cling tenaciously to rocks and consume the biofilm and algae growing there, even in strong currents. Their intricate, often mottled patterns of brown, black, and gold provide excellent camouflage against a rocky substrate.Keeping Hillstream Loaches requires replicating their natural habitat: a well-oxygenated tank with strong water flow (achieved with powerheads or good filtration), plenty of smooth rocks and pebbles for grazing and perching, and a clean, cool water temperature (typically 68-75°F or 20-24°C). They are peaceful community fish, ideal for unheated or temperate setups with other fish that appreciate similar conditions, such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Danios. While primarily algae grazers, their diet should be supplemented with high-quality sinking foods like spirulina wafers, algae wafers, and small, protein-rich foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Their active grazing behavior and unique appearance make them a fascinating and rewarding addition for the dedicated aquarist seeking something beyond the ordinary.
