The Mosquito Rasbora (Boraras brigittae) is a captivating and popular choice for nano aquariums, renowned for its tiny size and vibrant coloration. These micro-rasboras typically reach a maximum length of just 0.8 inches (2 cm), making them one of the smallest aquarium fish available. Their bodies display a striking orange to deep red hue, highlighted by a prominent, irregular black horizontal stripe or series of blotches running along their flanks, often edged with iridescent blue or green. Males tend to be more intensely colored and slimmer than females, especially when in breeding condition. Mosquito Rasboras are peaceful, shoaling fish that thrive in groups of 8-10 or more. A well-maintained planted tank with dim lighting, dark substrate, and plenty of hiding spots among fine-leaved plants like Java moss, as well as driftwood and leaf litter, will bring out their best colors and natural behaviors. They prefer soft, acidic water (pH 4.0-7.0, dH 1-10) with temperatures between 72-82°F (22-28°C). A slow current and good filtration, such as a sponge filter, are beneficial. Their diet should consist of small, high-quality foods such as crushed flake food, micro pellets, and especially live or frozen brine shrimp nauplii, daphnia, and microworms. Due to their minute size, they are best kept with other very small, peaceful fish like chili rasboras, celestial pearl Danios, or dwarf shrimp. They are excellent for planted tanks and biotope setups, offering a dynamic and colorful spectacle in a small package. While hardy once established, their small size means careful acclimation and stable water parameters are crucial.
Very similar to Chili Rasbora.
