The Apistogramma Cockatoo (Apistogramma cacatuoides) is a highly sought-after dwarf cichlid renowned for its vibrant colors, distinctive finnage, and engaging personality, making it a spectacular centerpiece for a well-maintained community aquarium. Males are particularly stunning, displaying a striking dorsal fin resembling a cockatoo's crest, often with black markings and brilliant yellow, orange, or red highlights, especially on the caudal and anal fins. Females are more subdued in coloration but become a beautiful golden-yellow with distinct black markings when breeding. These fish are relatively peaceful but can be territorial, especially during spawning. A minimum 10-gallon tank is recommended for a pair, with larger tanks better for a male and multiple females (a 'harem' setup). They thrive in soft, acidic water (pH 6.0-7.0, GH 2-10 dGH) with temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C). The tank should be heavily planted with plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and leaf litter to provide security and delineate territories. They are omnivores and will readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, which also help enhance their colors. Compatible tank mates include small, peaceful schooling fish like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. The Apistogramma Cockatoo is an excellent choice for experienced hobbyists looking to add a captivating and characterful fish to their setup, offering both beauty and interesting breeding behaviors.
Territorial when breeding.
