The Celebes Rainbowfish (Marosatherina ladigesi) is a captivating and elegant species, originating from the swift-flowing streams and rivers of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Renowned for its unique bifurcated caudal fin and shimmering, iridescent scales, this fish displays a mesmerizing dance of colors, particularly under proper lighting. Males are more vibrant, exhibiting flashes of yellow, blue, and green, often with dark outlining on their fins, especially when displaying to females. They are generally peaceful and active, preferring to swim in the mid to upper levels of the aquarium. An ideal setup for Celebes Rainbowfish would be a well-established, planted tank of at least 20 gallons for a small group, with plenty of open swimming space. They thrive in clean, oxygen-rich water with a slightly alkaline pH (7.0-8.0) and temperatures ranging from 72-79°F (22-26°C). Good filtration and regular water changes are crucial. Being a schooling fish, they are best kept in groups of 6 or more to encourage natural behaviors and reduce stress, making them excellent candidates for community tanks with other similarly sized, peaceful species. Their diet should consist of high-quality flake or micro-pellet food, supplemented with small live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms to enhance their coloration and vitality. The Celebes Rainbowfish is a true gem for the dedicated aquarist, offering beauty, activity, and a touch of the exotic to any freshwater setup.
