The Von Rio Tetra, more commonly known as the Flame Tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus), is a vibrant and hardy freshwater fish, highly prized for its striking coloration and peaceful disposition. Originating from the coastal rivers of Brazil, particularly the Rio de Janeiro region, these small characins are a fantastic choice for both novice and experienced aquarists. Reaching a modest size of about 1.5 inches (4 cm), their torpedo-shaped bodies are adorned with a captivating iridescent orange to fiery red hue, especially prominent around the caudal peduncle and anal fin, fading to a silvery-white on the belly. Two distinct vertical black bars are often visible behind their gill plates, adding to their distinctive appearance. Flame Tetras are schooling fish and thrive in groups of six or more, exhibiting more confident behavior and spectacular color displays when kept in appropriate numbers. Their placid nature makes them ideal inhabitants for community aquariums, coexisting harmoniously with other small, non-aggressive species like other tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and Corydoras catfish. To ensure their well-being and accentuate their colors, a well-planted aquarium with dim lighting and dark substrate is recommended, mimicking their natural habitat. They prefer soft, acidic to neutral water conditions (pH 6.0-7.5, dH 5-19) with temperatures ranging from 72-79°F (22-26°C). As omnivores, their diet should be varied, consisting of high-quality flake or micro-pellet food, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are crucial for maintaining their health and longevity, which can be up to 3-5 years. The Flame Tetra is not only an aesthetically pleasing addition but also a relatively easy-to-care-for and rewarding species that adds dynamic movement and a splash of radiant color to any planted community tank.
