The Red Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) is a captivating and relatively peaceful freshwater fish, renowned for its striking crimson coloration and elegant finnage. Males typically exhibit a more intense red hue, particularly during breeding or when displaying, often complemented by a distinctive black spot or 'phantom' mark just behind the gill plate. Their fins, especially the dorsal and anal fins, can have a delicate white or black edging, adding to their allure. Growing to about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.5-5 cm) in length, these tetras are ideally kept in schools of at least six, but preferably ten or more, to showcase their natural shoaling behavior and reduce stress. Red Phantom Tetras thrive in mature, softly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.5) with temperatures ranging from 72-79°F (22-26°C). They appreciate aquascapes that offer both open swimming areas and dense vegetation, along with some subdued lighting and leaf litter to mimic their natural Amazonian habitats. They are excellent community fish, compatible with other peaceful species such as small rasboras, corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and other similarly sized tetras. Their diet should consist of high-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, and a variety of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration.
