The African Butterfly Fish (Pantodon buchholzi) is a truly unique and fascinating species, captivating aquarists with its prehistoric appearance and distinctive surface-dwelling behavior. Resembling a miniature, aquatic pterodactyl, its large, wing-like pectoral fins are a sight to behold as it glides effortlessly just beneath the water's surface, patiently awaiting its next meal. This predatory fish is perfectly adapted to snatching insects and small invertebrates from the surface, a behavior you can mimic by offering suitable floating foods like crickets, mealworms, or high-quality dried insect-based pellets. Due to its propensity for jumping, a tightly fitting lid is absolutely essential for any tank housing this species, as they can leap surprisingly high. While generally peaceful towards fish too large to be considered prey, they can be territorial with their own kind or other top-dwelling fish. They thrive in tanks of 30 gallons or more, with plenty of surface cover from floating plants or large-leaved plants that reach the surface, mimicking their natural densely vegetated habitats. Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C) and a pH of 6.0-7.5. Their unique charm and specialized care make them an incredibly rewarding addition to a carefully planned community tank or a species-specific setup for the experienced hobbyist.
Surface-dweller, will eat small top-dwelling fish.
