The Indian Glassfish (Parambassis ranga) is a fascinating and often misunderstood species native to the slow-moving freshwater rivers and estuaries of India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Known for its remarkable transparency, its body is almost entirely see-through, allowing observation of its internal organs and skeletal structure, a feature that makes it a true marvel of nature. These small, peaceful fish typically reach an adult size of about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm). They thrive in well-planted aquariums with calm water flow, preferring environments that mimic their natural habitat with plenty of hiding spots among aquatic vegetation. While historically known for being artificially dyed vibrant colors (a practice strongly discouraged due to its detrimental health effects on the fish), their natural coloration is a subtle, often pearlescent silver, sometimes with a faint yellowish tint. Males can display more intense coloration, especially during breeding, with a reddish or bluish sheen to their fins. Indian Glassfish are shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals to ensure their well-being and encourage natural behaviors. They are omnivores, accepting a varied diet of high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Ideal tank mates include other small, peaceful species that won't outcompete them for food or stress them with aggressive behavior. Maintaining stable water parameters (pH 6.5-7.5, temperature 72-80°F/22-27°C) is crucial for their delicate nature.
