The Lambchop Rasbora (Trigonostigma espei), often confused with the Harlequin Rasbora, is a captivating and peaceful schooling fish perfect for planted community aquariums. Growing to about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length, these diminutive beauties are characterized by their striking copper-orange to reddish body coloration, which intensifies with good water quality and diet. Their most distinguishing feature is the dark, wedge-shaped 'lambchop' marking on their flanks, which is more elongated and pointed than the broader triangle of the Harlequin Rasbora, giving them a sleek and elegant appearance. They are an ideal choice for nano tanks and heavily planted setups, where their vibrant colors truly pop against green foliage. Lambchop Rasboras are active but non-aggressive, preferring to swim in a tight school, which not only provides safety but also creates a dazzling display of synchronized movement. They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0-7.0) with temperatures between 72-79°F (22-26°C). A well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas is crucial for their well-being, as well as a dark substrate to highlight their colors. They are omnivores, readily accepting high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and especially enjoying small live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Compatible tank mates include other peaceful nano species such as smaller tetras, corydoras, dwarf gouramis, and cherry shrimp. Their peaceful nature and stunning appearance make them a highly recommended species for both beginner and experienced aquarists seeking to add a splash of color and activity to their aquatic environments.
