The Pearl Danio (Danio albolineatus) is a captivating and underrated freshwater fish, renowned for its shimmering beauty and active, peaceful demeanor. Originating from the clear, fast-flowing streams and rivers of Southeast Asia, particularly Myanmar and Thailand, this species is a fantastic choice for both novice and experienced aquarists. Growing to an average adult size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5-6.5 cm), the Pearl Danio sports a sleek, torpedo-shaped body that is predominantly silver to light gold, adorned with a distinctive horizontal iridescent line that runs from gill to tail. This line often breaks into a series of pearl-like spots, especially under good lighting, giving the fish its common name. Beyond its striking appearance, the Pearl Danio is an incredibly hardy and adaptable fish, thriving in well-maintained community aquariums. They are active swimmers, preferring to inhabit the middle and upper levels of the tank, and are best kept in schools of at least 6-8 individuals to truly showcase their natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. A minimum tank size of 15-20 gallons is recommended for a small group, providing ample space for their energetic movements. They prefer clean, well-oxygenated water with temperatures ranging from 68-78°F (20-26°C), a pH between 6.0-8.0, and soft to moderately hard water. Their diet is unfussy, accepting high-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, and a variety of live or frozen treats like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. A well-planted tank with open swimming areas will allow them to feel secure and display their best colors. Compatible tank mates include other peaceful, similarly sized community fish such as other danios, tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and small gouramis. The Pearl Danio's combination of beauty, hardiness, and engaging behavior makes it a delightful and dynamic addition to any freshwater aquarium.
