The Glowlight Danio (Danio choprae) is a vibrant and active freshwater fish, highly prized in the aquarium hobby for its dazzling appearance and lively nature. Originating from the clear, fast-flowing streams of Myanmar, these small cyprinids typically reach an adult size of about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5-3.8 cm). Their most striking feature is a brilliant, iridescent orange-red stripe that runs horizontally along their silvery-gold body, from just behind the gill plate to the caudal fin, appearing to glow under proper lighting conditions—hence their common name. A peaceful and highly social schooling fish, Glowlight Danios thrive in groups of at least six, preferably ten or more, which encourages their natural shoaling behavior and reduces stress, making them more confident and active. They prefer well-oxygenated water with a moderate flow, mimicking their natural habitat, and appreciate a planted aquarium with open swimming spaces. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 68-78°F (20-26°C), a pH of 6.0-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water (dH 5-15). As omnivores, their diet should consist of high-quality flake or micro-pellet food, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms to ensure optimal health and color. They are an excellent choice for community aquariums, coexisting well with other peaceful, similarly sized fish that are not prone to fin-nipping. A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended for a small school, with larger tanks being preferable for more extensive groups.
