The Black Ruby Barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is a captivating and active schooling fish originating from Sri Lanka, highly prized by aquarists for its stunning coloration and lively behavior. Males, especially during breeding, develop a deep, iridescent ruby-red hue across their bodies, beautifully contrasting with the prominent black vertical bars or spots that give the fish its name. Females tend to be less intensely colored, often a more subdued golden-brown or silvery-tan with the same characteristic black markings. Both sexes feature translucent fins, sometimes tinged with red or black. These torpedo-shaped barbs typically reach an adult size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5-6.5 cm), making them suitable for moderately sized community aquariums. Black Ruby Barbs are generally peaceful, active swimmers that thrive in groups of six or more. Keeping them in larger schools mitigates potential fin-nipping tendencies, as their playful aggression is usually directed at each other within the group. They prefer a well-planted aquarium with open swimming spaces, a darker substrate to enhance their colors, and a moderate water flow. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 72-79°F (22-26°C), a pH of 6.0-7.0, and soft to medium-hard water (2-10 dGH). An omnivorous diet consisting of high-quality flake food, pellets, and regular supplementation with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms will ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration. They are excellent tank mates for other similarly sized, peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, Corydoras catfish, and small gouramis. Their energetic disposition adds dynamic movement and a splash of brilliant color to any well-maintained freshwater setup.
