The Silver Tip Tetra (Hasemania nana) is a vibrant and active freshwater fish known for its striking appearance and energetic disposition. Originating from the Amazon basin in South America, this small characin typically reaches an adult size of about 1.5 to 2 inches. Its slender, torpedo-shaped body boasts a shimmering silver-bronze coloration, beautifully contrasted by distinctive, iridescent white or silver tips on its dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, which give the species its common name. Some individuals may also display a subtle reddish tint at the base of these fin tips, particularly when healthy and well-conditioned.Silver Tip Tetras are renowned for their lively and somewhat boisterous nature. While generally peaceful within their own species, they are known to be enthusiastic fin-nippers, especially towards slow-moving or long-finned tankmates. For this reason, they are best kept in a species-only tank or with other fast-swimming, robust fish that can hold their own. A schooling fish, they thrive and exhibit their best behavior when kept in groups of six or more; a larger school helps to disperse any potential aggression among the group and reduces stress.An ideal aquarium for Silver Tip Tetras should be at least 20 gallons, preferably a 'long' style tank to accommodate their active swimming habits. Provide ample open swimming space, along with densely planted areas or driftwood for shelter and exploration. A dark substrate can help to enhance their colors. They prefer soft to moderately hard water with a pH range of 6.0-7.5 and a temperature between 72-78°F (22-26°C). As omnivores, their diet should consist of high-quality flake foods, micro pellets, and regular supplements of live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to ensure optimal health and coloration. With proper care and appropriate tankmates, the Silver Tip Tetra makes a dazzling and dynamic addition to the experienced aquarist's setup.
