The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is a quintessential freshwater aquarium fish, celebrated for its dazzling iridescent blue and red stripes that run along its translucent body. Originating from the clearwater and blackwater streams of the Amazon basin, this small, active characin adds an unparalleled splash of color and vitality to any community tank. Growing to only about 1.5 inches (4 cm), Neon Tetras are peaceful and thrive in schools of six or more, exhibiting beautiful shoaling behavior that enhances their visual impact. They prefer soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-7.0) with temperatures between 72-78°F (22-26°C) and appreciate a well-planted aquarium with dim lighting and open swimming spaces. A varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia will ensure their vibrant coloration and overall health. Their docile nature makes them excellent tank mates for other small, non-aggressive fish such as other tetras, rasboras, dwarf gouramis, and corydoras catfish, making them a perennial favorite for both beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
